Readalo is a Chrome extension that reads webpage text aloud with synchronized word highlighting. We are committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data Readalo accesses, how it is used, and what is stored.
Readalo reads visible text content from webpages you choose to have read aloud. This text is used solely to generate speech audio. Readalo never reads passwords, form inputs, or hidden page elements.
When using browser voices, all text-to-speech processing happens entirely within your browser using the Web Speech API. No text leaves your device. No network requests are made.
When using Kokoro voices, text from the current page is sent to a Kokoro TTS server
to generate audio. By default, this is a server running locally on your own machine
(localhost:8880).
You control the server URL in the extension settings.
If you configure Readalo to use a remote Kokoro server, the text you read will be sent to that server. You are responsible for choosing a server you trust. Readalo does not operate or control any remote TTS servers.
Readalo stores your preferences (selected voice, playback speed, engine choice, Kokoro server URL, and smart reading toggle) using Chrome's local storage API. This data never leaves your browser and is deleted when you uninstall the extension.
Readalo injects a content script on all pages to enable text selection and highlighting. This script only activates when you interact with the extension. It does not run in the background, collect data, or modify page content beyond adding temporary visual highlights during playback.
Readalo does not knowingly collect any data from anyone, including children under 13. Since we collect no personal information, COPPA considerations do not apply.
We may update this policy to reflect changes in the extension. If we do, we will update the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of Readalo after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
